The Return of Elvis du Pisanie

Prepare for a powerful weekend of theatre as "The Return of Elvis du Pisanie" arrives at the Seabrookes Theatre at DHS for three shows only.

Written by the legendary Paul Slabolepszy and starring Ashley Dowds, this production lands in Durban fresh from a rave-reviewed run at Johannesburg’s Theatre on the Square.

What happens when a suicide note is interrupted by the King of Rock 'n' Roll?

Meet Eddie du Pisanie, a 49-year-old salesman from the East Rand who has reached the end of his tether. Retrenched and disillusioned, Eddie is ready to end it all in his garage, until a song on the car radio sparks a memory that changes everything.

Eddie’s journey takes him all the way back to his childhood home in Witbank, chasing shadows of the past to see if he can reignite his present.

Where: Seabrookes Theatre, DHS.

When: Friday to Sunday. Show times differ.

King Oedipus

Laden with incredible imagery and timeless symbolism, the great Greek tragedy, Sophocles’ "King Oedipus", is given a fresh lease on life by the first-year DUT performance students.

Directed by Sikhuthali Oliver Bonga and designed by Yandisa Taleni, this reimagined staging of "King Oedipus" integrates first-year performance techniques students, experimenting in bridging historical Greek tragedy with immersive, interactive contemporary creative practice.

It features a cast of 60 and is presented in English and isiZulu.

The story centres around King Oedipus of Thebes, who unknowingly fulfils a prophecy that he will kill his father and marry his mother.

First performed around 429 BC, "King Oedipus" is widely considered one of the greatest plays of Western literature, and the most famous of all Greek tragedies ever written.

It has all the elements of an epic modern crowd pleaser: incest, war, plague, murder, sex and battles with mythical creatures.

Where: DUT Courtyard Theatre.

When: May 12 to May 15. Show times differ.
