Ben Voss is no stranger to the theatre fraternity and theatregoers alike.

Aside from his award-winning and critically acclaimed stage productions like “Green Mamba”, “Black Mamba”, Beauty and the B.E.E.”, “Bend it like Beauty” and “Benny Bushwacker”, his film and TV credits includes the “Spud” series, “Game”, “Beyond the River”, “Desert Rose” and “Reyka 2”.

With a wealth of experience under his belt, Voss is bringing his one-hander “Becoming Benno”, which he’s been touring locally and internationally, to Joburg.

The production explores his reflections on his journey to relocate to Australia. It begins at Sydney Airport, where Ben's unexpected detention by immigration, due to a problem with his Permanent Residency Visa, sets the scene.

Meanwhile, his wife and little one anxiously wait for him at arrivals.

During the hour-long delay, Ben experiences a shift between confidence and panic as he considers his options if his entry is denied.

With his 7kg hand luggage and a copy of the Qantas Spirit of Australia magazine, he explores themes of identity, family, and belonging through humour and heartfelt insight.

He also unpacks his encounters with Mr. Brody, a by-the-book Border Security officer; Arisha, an Australian visitor from Mumbai visiting her grandchild; and Jared, a British cleaner. These interactions leave an indelible impression.

Voss said: “I wanted to create a deeply personal piece of theatre to unpack the gamut of emotions that come with the three-year journey to residency. What better setting than a Border Force interrogation room - a no-man’s-land between an old and new life?

"The audience will be on the edge of their seats, wondering if this poor guy will stumble at the final hurdle and lose the future he’s spent years dreaming about.”

Michael Richard directs this character-driven production, which delivers both laughter and an emotional punch.
