Inxeba (The Wound) was the big winner at this year’s South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas), held at the Sun City Superbowl on Saturday.
The film, which has been shrouded in controversy, took home five Golden Horns for Best Feature Film, Best Actor (Nakhane Toure), Best Achievement in Directing, Best Achievement in Scriptwriting – Feature Film and Best Supporting Actor – Feature Film (Bongile Mantsai).

Following its release in February, the film has sparked debate and outrage around the country. There have been calls for a boycotts at screenings, the filmmakers and actors were threatened, and the film was briefly banned from being screened at mainstream cinemas following reclassification from 16 to X-rated.
The film’s ban was lifted in March following a court battle.
“This is incredible,” said the film’s director John Trengrove. “People think the backlash to Inxeba started this year when the film was released but actually it started six years ago. There were so many people who told us this was a mistake, so tonight is incredible. Tonight is an affirmation, it’s call to action for story tellers to take risks, to fly in the face of the status quo, because it pays off.”
Popular soapie Isibaya bagged three three Golden Horns, including Best Soapie. SABC1’s Uzalo walked away with the Most Popular TV Soap/Telenovela award.
Hard-hitting drama series Tjovitjo won two awards, for Best TV Drama and Best Actor – TV Drama (Warren Masemola).
Lerato Kganyago won Best TV Presenter.

Thuso Mbedu was named the Best Actress in a TV Drama for her role as Winnie in Is’thunzi, while former Generations star Mandla Gaduka took home Best Actor in a TV Comedy for his role as Solomon in Gauteng Maboneng.
