Now I know we say this every year, but wow, 2025 has flown by.
We’re barely a toe into October, and soon Christmas decorations will be popping up in stores (earlier and earlier each year), signalling the start of the silly season.
And we all know that once the festive season rolls around, with warmer days already luring us outside, people start slipping into celebration mode.
As soon as November hits, events will pile up, and social gatherings will be in full swing.
That means popping bottles, shaking up fancy cocktails, and chilling with a couple of cold ones.
The festive season is fast approaching.

But before all the festivities, here’s a challenge for you.
This month is Sober October (also known as Ocsober), and as the name suggests, it’s a 31-day challenge to give up alcohol for the month.
Yes, we’re already two days in, but it’s not too late to join.
Originally launched in the UK as a fundraising initiative, Sober October has grown into a global movement for anyone wanting to reset their relationship with drinking, improve well-being, and enjoy the benefits of going alcohol-free.
For some, it’s an easy challenge. For others, not so much, especially if you’re worried about missing out on fun while friends sip on their wine or cocktails.
If you’re wondering why you should give it a try, here are a few motivators:
If you’re in, it helps to prepare. Here are a few ways to make it through the month while still having fun:
Know your “Why”
Identify your motivation. Whether it’s better health, saving money, or testing your willpower, having a clear reason will keep you going when social situations test you.
Find a Sober October buddy
Challenges are easier with support. Invite a friend, partner, or colleague to join you.
Stock up on alcohol-free alternatives
The alcohol-free drinks market has exploded. From non-alcoholic beers and mocktails to sparkling water infusions and botanical spirits, there are endless festive options. Keep your fridge stocked so you never feel left out.
Create new rituals
If Friday nights usually mean cocktails, swap them for something fresh. Try movie nights, mocktail tastings, or fitness classes. Building new alcohol-free traditions is the secret to enjoying the month.
Be open about your challenge
Don’t be shy to say you’re doing Sober October. Most friends will be supportive, some might even join you. Plus, it saves you from those awkward “Why aren’t you drinking?” chats.
Plan ahead for social events
Got a party, wedding, or big night out? Plan in advance. Bring your own alcohol-free option, volunteer to be the designated driver, or suggest brunch and coffee dates instead of bars.
Sober October isn’t about restriction.
It’s about creating space for healthier habits and proving you don’t need alcohol to have fun.
With a little preparation, you’ll breeze through the challenge and maybe even carry some of your new habits into November and beyond.
