Sober October is here, and for many, that means embracing a month of sobriety.

Whether you're doing it for health, a challenge, or just a reset, navigating social situations without a drink in hand can sometimes feel a bit awkward.

Especially if you're usually the one to enjoy a drink with friends, you might find yourself facing a whole lot of questions, disbelief, or even playful teasing.

But it doesn't have to be that way. Saying "no thanks" to alcohol can be as smooth as your favourite mocktail.

Here’s how to decline a drink with confidence and grace, keeping the focus on fun, not on what you're not drinking.

Telling your friends that you're not drinking alcohol for the month shouldn't be a big deal.

How to simply and smoothly say "No thanks"

The quick and clear: A simple "No thanks, I'm good!" or "I'm not drinking tonight, but thanks!" is often all you need. You don't owe an explanation.

The distraction pivot: Shift the focus. "I'm sticking to sparkling water, but I'd love to hear about your week!" or "I'm good for now, but let's get another round of appetisers!"

The "I'm the driver" card: This one's universally accepted and ends questioning fast. "I'm driving tonight, so no drinks for me."

The wellness angle: If you're comfortable, share your reason. "I'm doing a Sober October challenge for my health", or "I'm taking a break to feel my best."

Embrace the mocktail: Order something delicious and non-alcoholic. A virgin mojito, a fancy soda, or a non-alcoholic beer helps you feel part of the fun. "I'll grab a cranberry and soda. Anyone else need anything?"

Mocktails are a great option.

Why it's really not a big deal

Most people genuinely don't care if you're drinking or not. They're usually just being hospitable or trying to connect.

True friends will respect your choice without pressure. It's becoming more common than ever to opt out, so you're definitely not alone.

Practice makes perfect. The more you confidently decline, the more natural it will feel.
