Jerome, the man who became an unlikely star during Jason Vanporppal's “Skate Across Africa" adventure, has officially received a brand new Volvo after a viral social media campaign rallied behind him.
The story began during content creator Jason Vanporppal's ambitious 5,500 kilometre skateboarding journey from Uganda to Cape Town.
While the challenge was already remarkable, viewers quickly became invested in someone else travelling alongside him.
Originally, Vanporppal planned to complete the journey with two Ugandan skateboarders. Unfortunately, the pair were unable to secure South African visas, leaving Vanporppal to continue the South African leg of the trip alone.
That is where Jerome entered the picture.
The Mabaso Foundation stepped in and provided one of its company vehicles, a Volvo, along with employee Jerome to escort Vanporppal safely through South Africa. Over the next 16 days, Jerome became far more than a driver.
As the pair travelled across the country, Jerome won over audiences with his kindness, humour and unwavering support.
Many viewers described him as a father figure who looked out for Vanporppal every step of the way. His calm presence and willingness to help turned him into one of the most loved personalities of the journey.
When the trip finally ended at Cape Town's City Bowl Skatepark, Vanporppal revealed something that surprised many followers. Despite spending days helping him complete the challenge, Jerome did not own a personal vehicle to support his family.
Vanporppal immediately called on his followers to tag Volvo South Africa online and help get Jerome a car of his own.
The response was swift.
Volvo South Africa answered the call and agreed to provide Jerome with a brand new vehicle. Vanporppal later shared a video capturing the emotional moment he told Jerome the news.
The heartwarming update quickly sparked celebration online.
