If there’s one thing South Africans take as seriously as rugby and braais, it’s food, and when the hunger pangs hit, we reach for our phone and order in.

The fourth annual Uber Eats Cravings Report recently revealed what South Africans have been ordering the most, and it's clear we’re a nation that loves a crispy, golden bite.

Chicken comes out on top

The report confirms that South Africans have a deep-fried devotion to chicken, with crispy fried chicken and pap topping the most-searched list. 

Whether it's a family meal, a post-party feast, or just an everyday craving, it seems nothing satisfies South Africans quite like a plate of seasoned, crunchy chicken with pap as a side.

Local is lekker

While global favourites like pizza, beer, burgers, and sushi continue to be popular, South Africans have a special place in their hearts (and stomachs) for homegrown flavours. 

Malva pudding, chakalaka, bunny chow, gatsbys, and boerewors rank among the most-loved local dishes on the app.

Midnight munchies

It turns out South Africans get especially peckish after dark, with Johannesburg and Pretoria leading the charge. A staggering 1.2 million orders were placed between 11 pm and 3 am – proving that nothing fuels a night out (or a study session) like a late-night takeaway.

Feeding the workforce

With its high-energy business district, Sandton City in Johannesburg boasts the most popular restaurants on Uber Eats. Whether it’s a quick bite between meetings or a late lunch, office workers keep the orders rolling in.

Vegan vibes

Durban has emerged as South Africa’s most vegan-friendly city, with 0.6% of all orders being plant-based. 

Meanwhile, Johannesburg and Pretoria collectively ordered the most vegan dishes, showing that even in a meat-loving nation, plant-based options are gaining ground.

Whether we’re craving comfort food or a midnight snack, one thing is certain – South Africans love their food, and food delivery services are delivering it by the bucket full.
