What better way to enjoy the chilly season than by stirring up something that will not only fill your stomach but also keep you warm and fuzzy?

Winter arrives with an undeniable intensity, ushering in cold weather that will undoubtedly leave you craving warmth and satisfaction.

If you love soup or stew, you can enjoy it without breaking the bank.

Here are winter meals you can try with your family:

Samp and meaty bones

This savoury and hearty meal will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy. This meal costs roughly R120, depending on the serving. Here’s how to cook it:

For the meaty bones, you will need: 

Cooking oil

One onion

Crushed garlic

Seasonings of your choice

Beef cubes

Sugar beans

Tomato paste

Method:

First, fry the onions and add the garlic, then add your seasonings and tomato paste. After mixing, add the meaty bones and stir the pot. Add beef stock to the pot and hot water, and close your pot for a maximum of two to three hours.

Finish it off by adding sugar beans for 5 minutes and enjoy.

For the samp, you can get yourself a quick-cooking samp, which you will add water to and then boil until the samp becomes soft. You can add butter and salt for flavour.

Chicken pasta soup

It is definitely not winter without soup, indulge in this warm soup that will have you wanting seconds.

This meal will cost you around R150 depending on the serving.

You will need:

Cooking oil

5-6 pieces of chicken

Carrots

Onions

Celery

Seasonings of your choice

Butter

Chicken cubes

Pasta of your choice

Method:

First, fry the chicken and season it with salt and pepper. Chop up all your veggies and to the pan, add a block of butter and pour your veggies inside. Add your seasonings and stir.

Transfer your veggies to a bigger pot and add the chicken to the pot of veggies and add the chicken cube, pour hot water into the pot, making sure that the water is almost full. Leave it to cook for an hour.

After an hour, take the chicken out of the pot, add pasta to the soup and let it cook for 10-12 minutes until the pasta is soft.

Shred the chicken and add it again to the pot, you can enjoy this with garlic bread or any bread of your choice.

Split pea soup

Here’s another affordable soup that you can enjoy because there is no such thing as “too much soup” especially in winter. The estimated cost for this soup is R100, depending on your serving.

You’ll need:

Cooking oil

Split peas

Onions

Carrots

Potatoes

Beef cubes

Crushed garlic

Seasonings of your choice

Method:

Firstly, you will need to soak your split peas for an hour before you start cooking. Then pre-heat your cooking oil first in a big pot. Add the onion and carrots, garlic and your seasonings, and leave it for 5-7 minutes.

Add the potatoes, peas and beef stock with hot water in the pot. Let it simmer for 45 to 60 minutes or until the peas are soft.

You can indulge in this soup with garlic bread or any bread of your choice.
