There might be an orange shortage, the way South African liquor brands are launching citrus-infused beverages.

The love of mimosas has sparked an interesting frenzy of ready-made versions being launched. In case you don’t know, a mimosa is champagne or MCC with a dash of orange juice.

South Africa’s growing appetite for ready-to-drink beverages is helping fuel the mimosa moment, with premixed cocktails steadily gaining traction among younger, urban consumers.

The local RTD market is on an upward trajectory, driven by demand for convenience, flavour-forward drinks and easy entertaining. Citrus-based profiles, in particular, are emerging as a standout favourite, tapping into a global shift towards lighter, more refreshing options that fit seamlessly into brunch and social occasions.

Pre-mixed mimosas have become widely available. Popular brands include Bernini Mimosa Spritzer, The Good Mimosa, Cheeky Monkey, and Papillon.

Robertson Winery Mimosa was among the first on the market and was a firm favourite in trolleys until more convenient sizes, such as cans, were created by other brands.

Bernini Mimosa made sure that we all knew it had arrived, with several activations promoting it at events such as the Takealot House of Beauty, and partnered with several influencers for digital campaigns

Last year, Bonang Matheba’s House of BNG launched its Nectar Mimosa, a premium, ready-to-drink sparkling wine cocktail. The drink was so popular that it sold within its first rollout, calling for more restocks.

Recently, Brutal Fruit Spritzer launched L’Orange Rossa, which taps into the global rise of citrus-based beverages and the sophisticated "aperitivo" culture.

L’Orange Rossa features a vibrant fusion of zesty orange flavouring and crisp apple. Perfectly balanced and irresistibly refreshing, the variant is designed to be served chilled with a slice of orange.

Whether you prefer the original mimosa, where you can add your desired amount of orange juice, a dash preferably, or have found your preferred brand that makes the perfect pre-mixed, citrus-infused drinks are here to stay.
