There’s no better way to celebrate the arrival of spring than with a stroll through one of South Africa’s most beautiful wine estates.

The 325-year-old Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West is inviting visitors to experience its spectacular gardens in full bloom with a guided Spring Garden Walk, running from Thursday, 16 October to Saturday, 18 October, from 09h00 to 11h00.

Led by Vergelegen’s knowledgeable horticultural managers, Richard Arm and Chris Randlehoff, these guided walks promise a captivating blend of history, horticultural expertise and seasonal inspiration.

Guests will uncover the fascinating stories behind the estate’s plantings and gain expert tips to apply in their own gardens.

Garden highlights: Roses, heritage and spring blooms

Among the many highlights are the formal rose garden, designed in Vergelegen’s signature octagonal layout, and the historic Octagonal Garden itself, both steeped in the estate’s rich horticultural heritage.

Visitors can also admire the herbaceous borders leading up to the homestead, alive with spring favourites such as foxgloves, delphiniums, Dutch iris, salvia, poppies, nigella, and accent grasses.

The guided walk offers a sensory journey through colour, fragrance and design, revealing how Vergelegen’s gardens have evolved over centuries while remaining true to their Cape heritage.

Tickets are priced at R295 per person and includes:

  • Entry to the estate
  • Guided walk with the Vergelegen horticultural team
  • Tea, coffee and a scone at Café Fleur Studio after the walk

For those inspired to take a piece of Vergelegen home, the Potting Shed Gift Shop will host its annual plant sale, offering homegrown estate plants to visitors - whether or not they’ve joined the guided walk.

It’s a rare chance to fill your garden with blooms nurtured on one of South Africa’s most historic wine estates.

Booking is essential, as spaces are limited. Reserve your spot online at vergelegen.co.za/events.

Opening hours:Monday–Sunday, 08h30–17h00 (last entry at 16h00)
