Michelle Obama, the former first lady of the United States, has sparked widespread conversation online after sharing candid relationship advice, urging young couples not to rush into living together too soon.
Speaking on her podcast, "IMO (In My Opinion)", alongside her brother Craig Robinson, Obama emphasised the importance of taking time to truly understand a partner before making major commitments.
A clip from the discussion has since gone viral on social media, prompting a flood of reactions from netizens.
“If it’s early in the relationship then you shouldn’t be moving in,” Obama said.
She added that financial stability should not influence such decisions, stressing that emotional readiness and genuine understanding matter more.
“You don’t know him yet. You can have deep like at first sight, but love, in most instances, it takes time,” she explained.
Obama highlighted that relationships require time and experience to test their strength, noting that individuals reveal themselves gradually.
“There are so many tests you need in a relationship. My recommendation is always, take some time. Make moving in way down the line,” she advised.
Most netizens agreed with Obama’s sentiments, while others shared differing perspectives based on personal experiences.
@therealzenobia commented: “Idk let’s normalise having separate homes forever.”
Another user, @the_apostle_wb, offered a different view: “My mom moved in with my dad after 6 months of dating. This year will be 46 yrs together. Do what’s best for you.”
@doloresrenee added: “Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to move in with someone to know them better. It is kind of weird to me to say you trust someone enough to move in with them or buy a home together but not marry them.”
Meanwhile, @dorecia.yjb shared: “It’s just frustrating because even when you think you know them, you don’t.”
Obama’s perspective is shaped by her own long-standing marriage to former US President Barack Obama.
The couple tied the knot on October 3, 1992 in Chicago and celebrated 33 years of marriage in 2025, becoming widely admired for their enduring partnership.
Together, they have two daughters, Malia Obama and Sasha Obama.
As conversations around modern relationships continue to evolve, Michelle’s advice highlights the value of patience, emotional awareness and allowing love to develop over time rather than rushing major life decisions.
