With a career that broadens from pageantry to Hollywood red carpets, Margaret Gardiner has learned a thing or two about what works when it comes to beauty and fashion.

After celebrating her 66th birthday in August, and not looking a day over 60, we asked the former Miss Universe 1978 advice about her beauty secrets she stands by to keep her youthful appearance.

During a conversation with “Independent Media Lifestyle”, Gardiner shared the number one secret and product she certainly cannot live without.

Sunscreen. I'm terrified of getting more facial cancer. SA women in particular should start young. Wear a hat. Wear a scarf.

“You can ditch it when you arrive, but in the car, while walking - protect your skin,” she shared.

In addition, you might assume that a beauty queen’s definition of beauty would fit the usual pageant script, but for Gardiner, it is more than one’s physical appearance.

She revealed that her definition of beauty is kindness.

When asked how she thinks the notion of beauty has changed over the years, she said: “It's more inclusive and I love that.”

Gardiner is a fashion editor for the Golden Globes and is also a red carpet expert, as she covers red carpet fashion.

During the conversation, she shared some of her fashion tips that she herself lives by, highlighting comfort and uniqueness when incorporating fashion with one’s sense of style.

“Incorporate fashion but stay with style. I always have a few fun pieces, but my basic style has remained the same. I replace the pieces I purchased when I was in my 20s because that's my style. Always feel comfortable,” Gardiner said.

She also created a series called "Travel Wardrobe" on Instagram, where she showcases her daily outfits when she is travelling, as she incorporates her pieces to create stunning outfits.

“Don't let anyone tell you how you should dress, look, or be. The most fashionable people create their own style. Be you,” she added.

She further included some grooming tips and said, “I think grooming falls under the categories of tidy, good fit and clean. It is in the details, so the total looks pulled together.

“There are things one can do. Finishes/accessories that can help complete a look and take it to the next level,” she said.
