Some of us take “wash day” very seriously, shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner or treatment, heat protector… the works, mense!
But then there are those lazy weeks when life just doesn’t allow for a full-on hair ritual.
Cardi B knows this struggle all too well. The pregnant rapper, expecting her fourth baby and first with boyfriend Stefon Diggs, recently got real about her hair situation, and let’s just say it’s been a while since those follicles had a proper wash.
“I haven’t washed my s–t in two months, I’m not even gonna front,” she admitted during an Instagram Live stream on October 27.
“Matter of fact, I’m lying. Probably three months. I don’t f–king know. I probably got all types of roach eggs, mosquito eggs, everything in this b**** right here.”
Now, if that doesn’t make you look at your own scalp and give it a pep talk, nothing will. Three months? At this point, her hair could probably start charging rent for all the things living there.
But the rapper wasn’t panicking. Calm as ever, she broke down her next steps: “I gotta oil down my scalp, ‘cause tomorrow I’m gonna do my real hair. I’m gonna wash it, then around Wednesday I’m gonna braid it.”
Of course, she’s also famous for her dramatic wig moments, joking that her forehead got “raw” from all the changes, so skipping a wash every now and then might just be a necessary break for a superstar’s busy life.
The "Up" rapper has never been shy about giving fans a peek behind the glam curtain, and her hair journey has been as dramatic as her lyrics.
She’s shared the lengths she goes to maintain healthy hair, from protective styles to costly wigs.
She’s also spoken about her hair-care routines in detail, giving fans a peek into her DIY methods.
Cardi B has used boiled onion water to give her hair shine, and created homemade hair masks with ingredients like avocado, eggs, mayonnaise, castor oil, honey and coconut oil, explaining: “All the good things that you put in your body, you gotta put in your hair.”
While it might sound extreme, onion juice has long been used in Africa, India, and other cultures for scalp health. It’s rich in sulphur, which strengthens hair follicles, boosts blood circulation, and can help promote growth. And we've seen the proof, Cardi's got inches, honey!
Her homemade hair masks, combining avocado, eggs, mayonnaise, castor oil, honey, and coconut oil, are a masterclass in nutrient-rich hair care.
Each ingredient has a purpose: avocado is packed with vitamins A, D, and E to hydrate and soften; eggs supply protein to strengthen hair strands; mayonnaise and honey lock in moisture; coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft for deep conditioning; and castor oil nourishes the scalp and encourages growth.
These are essentially “superfood treatments” for your strands, and by layering them together, Cardi is giving her hair the equivalent of a spa-day multivitamin.
Her process includes detangling, applying the mask (wrap it like “marinating chicken”), shampoo and condition, optionally rinse with rice water, set with rollers and blow-dry.
She emphasises moisture even for her straighter textures, proving that maintaining her hair is no small task, and yet, even a superstar queen sometimes hits a “lazy hair week”.
