Neil Ramautar has spent nearly two decades redefining beauty and artistry in South Africa.
Based in Durban, Ramautar is known as one of the country’s most respected make-up artists, stylists and the founder of BG Aesthetics, a thriving aesthetic studio and clinic in Durban North.
His work spans editorial, bridal, television, film and image consulting, and his client list includes some of the most notable names in entertainment and public life, from actresses and musicians to political figures and even international stars like Priyanka Chopra.
Ramautar’s journey into the beauty industry began with a desire to change perceptions.
“When I started, there was not really a male perspective in beauty,” he said. “I wanted to bring that into the industry. I wanted women to feel good about themselves - beauty is supposed to enhance, not mask.”
He described himself as naturally artistic, someone who has always enjoyed drawing and sketching.
“I used women’s faces as my canvas,” he explained. “That is how my passion took shape. I was self-taught, and I learned through observation and experimentation.”
Over the years, that passion has evolved into a career that bridges creativity and empowerment.
Ramautar’s versatility has earned him recognition across several areas - from the controlled environments of television and film sets to the personal, emotional space of bridal make-up.
“I do not really approach things by setting,” he explained.
“I adapt my technique to what the client wants. I do not have an ego when it comes to makeup. I listen - that is the key. Each client is different, and their needs guide the final look. For TV, of course, you follow the production brief, but the essence is always the same: making the client feel confident.”
That commitment to individual beauty is also at the heart of BG Aesthetics, his studio and clinic.
“I saw there was a gap in the market,” Ramautar said.
“I had already owned two studios for about ten years, and then I noticed a growing demand for treatments like microneedling and other skincare solutions."
"I wanted to create a space where beauty treatments were not only professional but also affordable. My goal was achievable beauty - giving everyone access to treatments that make them feel good.”
BG Aesthetics quickly became one of Durban’s leading aesthetic spaces, offering services that range from facials and skincare to advanced beauty treatments.

Ramautar credited his success to consistency, professionalism and authenticity. “You are only as good as your last client,” he said.
“One bad review can hurt you, so I treat everyone the same - whether it is a celebrity or someone walking into my studio for the first time."
"I have worked with members of the Zulu royal family, politicians’ wives, actresses and everyday women. The one thing they all have in common is that they want to be the best version of themselves.”
When asked about career highlights, Ramautar paused.
“For me, the highlight is that I am still here, still relevant after all these years,” he said. “Being the go-to makeup artist for celebrities when they come to the province means a lot. Working with Priyanka Chopra was a dream - I had her on my vision board, and then one day, I got the email. That is the power of intention.”
Another memorable moment was working on the Miss South Africa pageant.
“I had never really been into pageants,” he admitted.
“I did not know much about their values or politics. But when I got there, it was such a beautiful experience. I am just an Indian guy from Durban who was flown to Johannesburg to be part of something that big. It showed me how far I have come.”
He also recalled styling American singer Miguel for the MTV Awards, describing it as a moment that reminded him of how global beauty and fashion can be. “It was exciting to see my work reach beyond South Africa,” he said.

Looking to the future, Ramautar has big plans for BG Aesthetics and his personal brand. “We are going into our fifth year now, and there are exciting things ahead,” he shared.
“We are in the process of acquiring unique international brands to bring into our clinic. I have had a few opportunities in the reality TV space, but right now, I’m focused on what I do best - makeup, bridal work and helping women feel beautiful.”
Ramautar’s philosophy is rooted in authenticity rather than trends.
“I do not follow trends because they come and go,” he said. “I am not an influencer. I do not push products. I believe in real artistry and results that make people feel good about themselves.”
He also noted how much the beauty industry has evolved, especially for men.
“I do not wear makeup myself, but it is amazing to see how men are now getting touch-ups for their weddings. Gen Z is very open about wanting to look good. It is not considered feminine anymore - it is just about self-care.”
