Woolies bag turned ‘Cat suit’

Guys... at this point, the Woolies bag isn’t just a bag. It’s a lifestyle, a status symbol, a whole personality. Mzansi has taken this Woolworths carrier and pushed it straight into the fashion hall of fame, Ksana.
Over the past few weeks, the story of Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his now-infamous “money bag” moment has set the internet alight, and the Woolies tote has been propelled from practical to prestige overnight.
Let’s be clear, this is not about glorifying anything dodgy. The Woolworths black-and-white bag was already the quiet flex: shop there and people assume you know your herbs, your barista and your life.
When Matlala enters the chat, and suddenly a "cheap" recyclable bag becomes more iconic than a Louis Vuitton Neverfull. TikTok couldn’t cope. Twitter was projecting. Facebook aunties were shook.
The timelines turned into a Woolies-bag museum of satire, shock, and the kind of dark humour only South Africans can pull off while making pap.
And just when we thought the chaos had peaked, the fashion girlies stepped in.
In a recent video, the cutest little girl showed up wearing a full-on Woolies bag jumpsuit.
The people are calling it “The Cat Suit”. Clever noggal! She paired it with a bright red beret (yes, the EFF-adjacent kind), pink Hello Kitty Crocs, and a tiny purple handbag because where must her lip gloss go? Exactly.
@ClintonR commented on @brad36034 video clip: "This country 🤣🤣🤣🤣 can never be serious. She's so cute."
@Thabo Tbos commented: "She's wearing a R300k dress👌 Bheki Cele knows it too 😁."
@Freddie wrote: "My girl, it's expensive taste at that age 🤣"
While @kobus wrote: "🤣SA people 😂. If money was a person it would definitely look this cute ☺️💐☺️."
At this point, the Woolies bag has lived MANY lives: First grocery tote. Then the soft-life starter pack. Then the alleged evidence bag. Now high fashion. Versatility? Unmatched.
And to make it even more poetic? Woolies recently switched their reusable bags from black to white, meaning the vintage Cat Edition has officially become a collector’s item.
Mzansi, never change.
