With cold weather conditions expected to grip parts of the country this week, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has assured residents that disaster management teams are on high alert.

Cogta MEC, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, confirmed that the province is ready to respond to any potential weather-related incidents resulting from two approaching cold fronts.

Last year unprecedented heavy snowfall in KZN saw dozens of motorists stranded on the N3 highway for up to two days. At the time a climate expert said the country needed to improve its early warning systems

“The safety and well-being of our residents is our priority,” said MEC Buthelezi. “Our disaster management teams are prepared to respond effectively should any weather-related incidents occur,” Buthelezi said.

According to weather forecasts, the cold fronts will bring cooler temperatures across several regions. High-lying areas in KwaZulu-Natal may also see snowfall on Wednesday.

MEC Buthelezi said disaster management teams have been placed on standby and are already coordinating with weather authorities to track the progress of the cold front. “These teams are in communication with weather authorities and will continue to monitor the developing weather system closely,” he said.

The MEC urged members of the public to stay alert and heed official weather warnings. “Residents are strongly encouraged to remain vigilant and pay close attention to weather warnings and updates as they are issued by the relevant authorities,” said Buthelezi.

He emphasised that taking early precautions could help reduce the impact of the anticipated weather conditions. “Taking proactive measures can significantly reduce the potential impact of the cold front,” he said.

The department also confirmed that its Provincial Disaster Management Centre will continue to provide guidance and updates as the weather system develops.

Key safety tips for residents:

  • Stay informed by checking official weather updates regularly.
  • Prepare for possible disruptions, especially in high-lying areas.
  • Follow any advice or instructions from local authorities regarding safety measures.

The warning comes as the province braces for a possibly harsh winter, particularly in mountainous areas that are vulnerable to snow and freezing temperatures.
