KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siboniso Duma has commended the operations of the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) which has seen 293 alleged drunk drivers arrested in the province since August.

A total of 93 drivers were arrested this past weekend in roadblocks across the province.

Duma said in a recent incident on Sunday night, on the N2 highway in Mtubatuba in northern KZN, an alleged drunk driver almost crashed his vehicle into an RTI vehicle, driven by Chief Provincial Inspector, Thulani Mthembu.

“This motorist was speeding and overtaking on a solid white line—ignoring the fact that it is unsafe to do so and also unlawful. Inspector Mthembu gave chase and stopped the vehicle about 1km away. We commend motorists and members of the public who worked with our highly efficient, energetic, and dedicated team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate to ensure the arrest of this unruly motorist.”

He added that a breathalyser test was conducted, and the motorist was found to be three times over the legal blood alcohol limit (which is less than 0.05g/100ml in South Africa). He was detained at KwaMsane Police Station.

Duma added that he will also be following up on a matter where an alleged drunk driver who crashed into more than five cars on the N3 near Pietermaritzburg was released from custody.

“I have undertaken to attend some of the court appearances of drunk motorists to support our dedicated RTI team. They have responded positively and with agility to my mandate that they should be firm and sustain the Zero Tolerance, No Nonsense, and Alufakwa campaign.”
