An investigation team from the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has been dispatched to Limpopo where 12 people were killed on the R81 at Ga-Sekgopo in a crash involving two trucks and a minibus taxi.
Images from the crash scene show the taxi wedged between the two trucks.
The crash occurred on Sunday according to the Transport ministry. In a statement, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and deputy minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa expressed their heartfelt condolences and message of support to the bereaved families.
The statement said that police had confirmed that a male driver, 10 women passengers and a child, between the ages of 7 and 10, died in the crash.
The ministry said Hlengwa had directed the RTMC to dispatch a team to determine the cause of the crash and provide a report in this regard.
Creecy and Hlengwa also called on motorists for heightened vigilance on the roads and to be responsible for their own safety and the safety of other road users.
Limpopo premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba is set to meet with the grieving families on Monday afternoon at the Pietersburg Hospital Recreation Hall as they deal with the identification process for the deceased.
“The provincial government stands in solidarity with the families during this difficult time and we are committed to providing them with the necessary support,” stated Ramathuba.
