Durban commuters will soon have access to a dedicated Public Transport Information Centre, offering real-time updates and assistance through toll-free calls, WhatsApp, and email, as eThekwini Municipality launches a series of initiatives to mark Transport Month.

The centre, launched by the eThekwini Transport Authority (ETA), is “designed to ease access to reliable public transport information and services.” Officials said the facility will allow commuters to receive “quick, accurate updates and assistance relating to their public transport.”

The new platform forms part of a wider programme planned for October to improve transport services and communication with commuters.

Among these initiatives is the ‘Move to MUVO’ campaign, which will be rolled out at transport hubs and busy commuter routes. According to the municipality, the MUVO card is “more convenient, secure, and reliable for daily travel, and is the future fare system of public transport in Durban.”

The ETA also confirmed that it will host regional roadshows with the bus and mini-bus taxi industries to advance the GO!Durban public transport strategy.

These engagements will build up to “the major milestone marking the official start of the GO! Durban contract negotiations at the end of October.”

Road safety awareness campaigns will run alongside these activities, targeting pedestrians, scholars, communities, and public transport operators.

Another first for the City is the introduction of Cycle Sunday, which the municipality described as “aimed at increasing awareness of shared road spaces among pedestrians, motorists, and non-motorised transport.”

In addition, a new transport website carrying information on the City’s public transport services will go live later this month.

The municipality said these initiatives are aligned with the objectives of Transport Month, the Department of Transport’s national campaign that “highlights the importance of safe, accessible, and integrated transport in driving both social and economic development.”
