Police in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands have launched a murder investigation following the discovery of a burnt body inside a vehicle in Mpophomeni on Sunday morning.

The victim has been identified as local resident Mike Pryor of Kwa Heri Farm in the Indezi Valley, uMngeni Local Municipality (Howick).

According to uMngeni Local Municipality’s deputy mayor, Sandile Mnikathi, the community has been left in shock by the killing.

“It is with deep sorrow and profound shock that I, on behalf of uMngeni Local Municipality, announce the tragic passing of resident Mike Pryor,” Mnikathi said in an official statement.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Mike’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. We extend our deepest sympathies and support.”

The municipality said that Pryor was abducted from his home on Saturday night, and that his remains were discovered the following day inside his burnt vehicle in the Mpophomeni area.

“According to the preliminary investigations by the South African Police Services (SAPS), Mike was abducted from his home on Saturday night. His remains were later discovered in his vehicle, which had been burnt out in the Mpophomeni area,” the statement read.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said officers made the discovery after responding to reports of a burnt vehicle.

“Police responded to reports of a burnt-out vehicle and found the body when they opened the boot,” he said.

“On-scene investigation uncovered the identity of the vehicle owner, and it was then established that the owner of the vehicle was reported kidnapped.”

He added that the motive for the killing was not yet known. “The motive of the killing is unknown at this stage and the search for the suspects is underway,” Netshiunda said.

In its statement, the municipality urged residents to remain cautious.

“We are reminded of the fragility of our safety and the need for constant vigilance,” Mnikathi said.

“We urge all residents to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant regarding their personal and property security. Please report any suspicious activity or information that could assist the police to local authorities immediately.”
