The newly appointed executive director for the Technical Services Department, which includes the water, electricity and sanitation directorates among others, in the eThekwini Municipality has committed to ensuring ratepayers receive value for money.

The eThekwini Municipality announced this week that Ednick Msweli is the new director, with his appointment taking effect this month.

The municipal directorates that form part of the Technical Services Department include Water and Sanitation Services, Waste Management, Energy Management, Engineering Services, Human Settlements, EThekwini Transport Authority, and Road Infrastructure Management.

Msweli is a civil engineer by profession and is registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa as a Professional Engineering Technologist. He brings over 31 years of experience, most of which has been in the water and sanitation sector.

Msweli’s previous roles include serving as Director of Water and Sanitation Services, Deputy Head at eThekwini Water and Sanitation, and General Manager for Operations at uMgeni Water.

The City stated that his appointment is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening the City’s infrastructure renewal efforts and driving sustainable growth.

In a statement, Msweli said he viewed this appointment as an opportunity to actively contribute to the City’s long-term vision.

“I see the appointment as executive director as an opportunity to contribute to the vision of eThekwini Municipality to be the most liveable city by 2030 and beyond. I look forward to working with the management team and staff from the directorates in Technical Services and inspiring them to prioritise the residents of eThekwini Municipality and deliver on their service-delivery needs,” he said.

He said his immediate focus will be on enhancing waste management, addressing water and electricity losses, and improving the maintenance of roads.

“The Technical Services Department has the responsibility to deliver infrastructure and services that ratepayers are entitled to and pay for. My focus will be on making sure we deliver value for money for our ratepayers,” he added.
