KZN education department advances staff verification programme to combat fraud

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education’s employee and learner verification campaign is advancing steadily, with officials confirming that both school-based and office-based phases are well underway.

Department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said the province is pleased with the progress to date.

“The Department of Education has embarked on the employee and learner verification. We are happy to report that the process is going very well in KwaZulu Natal.”

He explained that the school-level phase wrapped up earlier this month.

“We finished the school level two weeks ago and this week we started with the office-based officials at the circuit level, district level, head office level and yesterday the head of department Mr Ngobo also participated in presenting himself to the verifiers.”

Mahlambi commended staff across the province for their commitment.

“We are happy in the manner in which the process has gone thus far and he also echoed the same thanking all the employees in the department who have sacrificed, some spending the whole day engaging with the process of verification.”

He added that the initiative will help the Department maintain accurate records and strengthen financial planning.

“This is the process that will, when it's completed, will assist us to know exactly how many employees we have in the system, how many learners we have in the system, that will also assist in terms of the allocation of whatever financial support that we give.”

Ngcobo also took a firm stance on possible fraud, with the Department stating that he “emphasised that, should any “ghost employees’ be identified, measures are already in place to ensure the matter is dealt with swiftly and that all guilty parties will face legal action.”
