Transport MEC Siboniso Duma has stated that his department is undertaking several construction projects.
He briefed the members of the Finance Portfolio Committee this week about the performance of his department.
He revealed that the department has invested billions in infrastructure projects across the province.
"We are making history by rolling out many construction projects in KZN. We are undertaking Siyahlola Programmes on a regular basis, which indicates our commitment to changing the face of KZN for many years to come."
Currently, rehabilitation projects committed on the ground amount to R14.6 billion, with anticipated outputs of (5.2 million m²) over the next Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) period.
"We are increasing the lifespan of our road networks through resealing projects. Reseal commitments are at R666 million, with anticipated outputs of (903.6 thousand m²) over the next MTEF period."
“We are also upgrading gravel roads to surface roads in various corners of the province, working with Amakhosi. We are opening roads and bridges, including the Welisizwe Bridges.
“In terms of construction, we face challenges related to mining rights and access to quarries. Contractors are experiencing significant challenges, primarily revolving around operational logistics and relations with the community and Amakhosi.”
He stated that most of the department's projects are on track. “We have intervened as a department, and fortunately, we have not experienced stoppages in road construction projects.”
His comments come after uMngeni Municipality mayor Chris Pappas raised concerns about the state of some roads in the province.
He said small towns were most impacted by deteriorating road networks deteriorate as their economies suffered.
