High-flying twins Rebecca and Daniel Major from Reddam House Umhlanga have capped off their schooling career with eight distinctions each in the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) matric exams.
They both also featured on the IEB's Outstanding Achievements List for having achieved within the top 5% in 6 or more Subjects and achieved a rating level of 7 in Life Orientation.
The school commented that the Major twins delivered what staff describe as a “double major” year, balancing demanding leadership, cultural commitments and academic excellence.
“Rebecca served as head girl and led a major school production Anastasia, while Daniel demonstrated consistent leadership through sport and chaired a key student portfolio, reflecting discipline, humility and mutual support,” Reddam House Umhlanga commented in a statement.
Both twins plan to study Chemical Engineering at Stellenbosch University this year.
Rebecca said while the matric year was stressful, it was very rewarding.
“There was quite a lot going on, so it was a big accomplishment to actually push through to the end.”
She said having her brother with her throughout her schooling career had been really enjoyable.
“I really enjoyed having a study buddy and someone who is always there to talk things through with.”
Her advice for matric pupils this year is to “take it one step at a time”.
“My advice is to show up, lean in and take every opportunity that you can even when it is difficult. And it is going to be stressful but the advice that our principal gave us at the beginning of the year and that I have been following is just take it one step at a time, there is so much going on but you can do it. Just keep your head down and stay positive.”
Daniel said it's difficult to imagine what his schooling experience would have been like without his twin sister with him.
“Every now and then I try to reflect on how my life would be different. But really, it's become such a big part of who I am. And it gives you that comfort that you have a built-in support system wherever you go. So you can be confident in the knowledge that there is someone who supports you, even if they're not necessarily doing it with you.”
He added that despite the stress of the matric year, it was a positive experience.
“I would say it was the highlight of my life so far. It's just been such a blessing to be at the school that I'm at, at Reddam and they really did make it special for us. So as much stress as there was, I could stand by the knowledge that it was standing me in good stead, which kind of gives a different perspective to it.”
Daniel said having the right mindset in the matric year was important.
“The year will stretch you, but you'll also grow from it. If you just reframe your mind, it just makes everything a little bit easier.”
