One person has died and two others are fighting for their lives in hospital following a single-vehicle crash in uMhlanga during the early hours of Friday morning. The tragic accident occurred at the intersection of uMhlanga Rocks Drive and Fernlea Crescent.
According to private emergency service KZN VIP Emergency Medical Services, paramedics along with other first responders were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a major collision. Upon arrival, rescue teams found a severely mangled vehicle with multiple trapped and injured occupants.
The driver of the vehicle had sustained catastrophic injuries and was pinned deep inside the wreckage. KZN VIP said recognising the severity of the incident, KZN VIP Advanced Life Support medics immediately initiated critical life-saving interventions while coordinating additional resources, including the Fire Department, to assist with the complex extrication process, KZN VIP said in a statement.
It said emergency crews and firefighters worked tirelessly under incredibly difficult, high-pressure conditions for an extended period to free the trapped driver using specialised rescue equipment. Once safely cut from the wreckage, the driver was rushed to a nearby hospital under advanced medical care.
However, despite the extensive efforts of paramedics on the scene and doctors at the receiving medical facility, the driver succumbed to severe injuries in hospital.
The remaining two passengers inside the vehicle sustained serious injuries. They were stabilised at the scene by emergency crews before being rushed to local hospitals for the urgent, ongoing care they require. The cause of the crash remains unknown at this stage.
KZN VIP extended its condolences to the loved ones of the deceased and wished the surviving patients a speedy recovery.
