Mercedes-Benz is keen to take advantage of the legendary status that its iconic G-Class off-roader enjoys, and in product planning terms, that means expanding the family.

The range has already been expanded to include an electric model, and a smaller version of the G is also in the works. Now the German firm has also confirmed that a Cabriolet version of the current G-Class is on the horizon.

Judging by the disguised prototypes we see here, it appears to have a similar body format to the previous Maybach G-Class Landaulet of 2017. But while the latter was an ultra-exclusive and ultra-expensive model, the new Cabriolet will be aligned with the regular G-Class model range.

According to Mercedes, the first prototypes of the new model are currently completing their first test kilometres in Austria, before making their way to Sweden for some extreme weather testing in snowy landscapes.

“Following a hugely positive response to the first teaser details, Mercedes‑Benz is sending prototypes into the world on rigorous test drives on the road,” the carmaker said. “The G‑Class Cabriolet reaffirm the brand’s unwavering commitment to excellence and shaping the future of this off-road icon.”

Mercedes hasn’t shared launch timing yet, but the newcomer is likely to surface in 2026, and further details on the engine range and specifications will be made closer to launch.

As previously reported, Mercedes is also working on a ‘baby’ G-Class, which is expected to boast the same rugged and boxy design as the regular G.

Reports from abroad suggest it will use a bespoke ladder-frame chassis, meaning it won’t be related to the car-based GLA and GLB. It will be a true off-roader, in other words.

Powertrains have yet to be confirmed, the but little G is expected to offer both electric and (likely hybrid) internal combustion options to customers.

When we know more, so will you.
