SA smuggler sent to US prison

A South African, Jan Swart, has been sentenced by a US federal court to 18 months in prison for his role in smuggling leopard hides and skulls in to the country.

In 2004, Limpopo hunting outfitters Swart and Willem Basson were caught in the act by officers of the US Fish and Wildlife Service as they attempted to bring illicit contraband - five leopard hides and three skulls - into Colorado.

A hunting outfitter is someone who arranges hunting safaris for overseas clients to South Africa.

According to Rod Potter, chairperson of the KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife Crime Working Group, the contraband was seized during a random search of luggage at the airport.

The men were not at the time taken into custody, but this February they were arrested while exhibiting at a hunting safari road-show in Pennsylvania.

According to Potter, Basson was convicted, warned for his part in the importation and deported to South Africa.
