The dream of enjoying the ocean is now a reality for more people with disabilities, thanks to the generosity of the Smith family. Their donation of a specialised beach sand cruiser wheelchair to the eThekwini Municipality is paving the way for greater inclusivity at local beaches.
The gesture was inspired by Reece Smith, a quadriplegic young man whose love for the sea motivated his family to help others experience the same joy. The wheelchair, designed to navigate sand and water, will be stationed at the Amanzimtoti Beach, offering new opportunities for those with mobility challenges to embrace the ocean’s beauty.
Mayor Cyril Xaba, who accepted the donation on behalf of the municipality, praised the family’s vision and compassion.
The specialised wheelchair, constructed with durable materials for navigation on sand and in water, is a welcomed addition to the City’s amenities. Mayor Xaba commended the Smith family for their generosity and vision.
“This donation will go a long way to ensure the accessibility of the beach for those who are disabled. The kindness of the Smith family is a shining example of what can be achieved when residents and other stakeholders work together for the betterment of society. The City has committed to purchasing more of these wheelchairs to improve accessibility at all our beaches,” said Mr Xaba.
Reece Smith, whose determination and compassion shine through despite his physical challenges, explained the motivation behind the family’s gesture.
“I noticed that there were so many people who were unable to go into the ocean and enjoy the surf with their families. When we acquired this special Sand Cruiser wheelchair, we decided to donate it to the City so others can also enjoy the ocean,” he said.
The eThekwini Municipality plans to expand the initiative, aiming to make all beaches more accessible and inclusive.
