The Independent on Saturday has once again put its weight behind a project it is passionate about, assisting the Denis Hurley Centre Street Lit booksellers by collecting books for their vendors for Mandela month.

The paper helped the project collect books last year for Mandela Month. Churches and partner organisations around the city collected books for the project – almost doubling their goal of 10 052 books which was one for every day Madiba spent in prison.

We would like to help top up the book stock again this year so we are calling on readers and supporters to donate fabulous, quality, good-condition books to the project over the next few weeks. Of special interest are best sellers, good novels, children’s books and self-help books.

The Denis Hurley Centre is a proactive NGO based in Durban which cares for the city’s poor and marginalised. One of their flagship entrepreneurship projects is Street Lit. The much-loved, feel-good, Durban-based entrepreneurship programme enables a team of homeless and formerly homeless men and women to earn a modest living, have a renewed life-purpose, and to encourage and enable people to read more affordable books.

They are always looking for places to sell their fabulous books. If you have a safe, legal, busy, public place for one of the vendors to sell books, please let them know.

Books can be dropped off at various drop off points over the next month. Alternatively if you have a large collection of books, call Frank Chemaly on 083 230 5629 and he will try to arrange a pick up.
