Durban's Horseshoe bend at Mitchell Park
Image: Supplied
The postcard this week shows the unusual intersection of Musgrave, Innes and Florida roads in the early 1900s, so designed to turn the tram around at the top of the hill. The card is postmarked for Durban Natal and possibly dated for 1907.
On the left in the foreground is today Jamieson park, which was originally a pineapple plantation in the city and in the left foreground Mitchell Park, a famed Durban spot for leisure and entertainment along with its zoo and aviaries. It was famed for Nelly the elephant who was donated to the city of Durban.
The old picture shows very little development along Innes Road, but you can see the tops of the grand homes of Morningside, including the Hulett homestead at 14 Nuttall Gardens which was designed by Stott and Kirby in 1905 and erected in 1906.
The trees in today's picture obscure many of the features of the area, especially the mansions up on the hill.
