In celebration of cake culture, The Sweet Slice Luxe Cakery's owner, Sibahle Khumalo, is set to join an esteemed panel of judges for the inaugural Independent on Saturday’s Cake in the Garden event, taking place on September 27 at the picturesque Durban Botanical Gardens.

This exciting new initiative, inspired by global cake picnic events, welcomes cake lovers and bakers alike to come together in a delightful fusion of flavour, creativity, and connection.

At just 29, Khumalo, who runs a boutique bakery and café in Durban's vibrant Florida Road, said she is thrilled to celebrate cake culture in such a fun and creative way.

“I’ve been craving an event like this in Durban, and I’m sure many others have, too.

“I expect it to be a joyful gathering where Durban comes together to celebrate creativity, flavour, and connection... and hopefully discover exciting new local talent through the competition winners,” she said.

As one of the judges, Khumalo said she will be focusing on presentation, originality, and taste.

“A good bake should balance flavour with creativity,” she said.

She advised bakers to keep the design simple and focus on flavour.

“A well-executed classic can often shine brighter than an over-complicated design.”

For Khumalo, baking is more than just business; it is about creating moments of joy and connection.

“Events like Cake in the Garden remind us why sharing cake will always bring people together,” she said.

Her boutique bakery and café is known for handcrafted cakes, pastries, and desserts.

Khumalo said they specialise in custom celebration cakes and gourmet dessert catering.

“Beyond baked goods, we offer baking classes and team-building experiences, and we recently launched Cake Card SA, a first-of-its-kind greeting-card-shaped box with two slices of cake that can be shipped nationwide,” she said.

As a young, successful business owner, Khumalo’s advice to others who are thinking of opening their own bakery is to start small, be consistent, and focus on quality.

“Learn to manage your resources wisely, and don’t be afraid to innovate... that’s how you stand out,” she said.

The tickets are R120 on Quicket and include a cake box, five tokens for cake, a goodie bag, and a nice hot cup of tea or coffee.

The five tokens received by each ticket holder are redeemable for slices of cake, which will ensure everyone enjoys the occasion.

The event runs from 11am to 3pm and promises a feast for the senses, with an enchanting dress code of florals and pastels, encouraging attendees to don their most vibrant outfits and celebrate the beauty of the season.

The only rule at the cake picnic is “no cake, no entry”.

Guests are encouraged to bring a floral-themed cake, either homemade or store-bought, to be displayed on a central table. A selection of these cakes will be chosen for a formal competition judged by a panel.

Awards will be given for entries that demonstrate the most creativity and a beautiful presentation.

Guests are encouraged to bring picnic blankets, relax under the trees, and enjoy the atmosphere.
