Sisters and co-owners of Chilli Chocolate Chefs in Durban, Zainab and Faatimah Paruk, look forward to a showcase of talent, new ideas, and cakes that reflect Durban’s diversity as judges of the inaugural Independent on Saturday’s Cake in the Garden event.

The event will take place on September 27 at the picturesque Durban Botanical Gardens from 11am to 3pm.

The chefs said they are both excited and look forward to seeing everyone’s creations at the event.

“Cake is something so personal; it can carry family traditions, creativity, and of course flavour. We’re honoured to celebrate that alongside so many passionate bakers.”

The sisters said they expect a showcase of incredible talent, new ideas, and cakes that reflect Durban’s diversity.

Most importantly, they said they are looking forward to the joy and community spirit that food always brings.

“We’ll be looking for flavour balance, creativity, and technical execution, as well as how the cake makes us feel when we taste it. Food is as much about emotion as it is about precision.”

The judges' advice for entrants is to keep it simple and stay true to style. “Don’t overcomplicate things; focus on getting the basics perfect, like a well-baked sponge, a balanced filling, and clean presentation can go a long way.”

The sisters explained that cooking and baking are their love languages.

“For us, it’s about connection with our family, our community, and our heritage. It’s also our creative outlet. Food is where we bring together flavour, design, and emotion.”

They admitted that working together as siblings is both challenging and inspiring.

“We balance each other out, with Faatimah being more detail-oriented while Zainab is creative. At the heart of it, there’s trust, and that allows us to push boundaries creatively while knowing that we’ve always got each other’s backs.”

Their advice for young bakers who want to launch their own businesses is to start small, be consistent, and build their reputation on quality.

“Don’t be afraid of hard work because the hours are long, and the rewards are worth it. Also, use social media to your advantage; it’s the most powerful way to showcase your craft and build a following.”

The chefs said food is so much more than what is on a plate.

“It’s about memory, celebration, and togetherness. We hope that through Chilli Chocolate Chefs, we continue to inspire the next generation of bakers and chefs to dream big and craft their own stories through food.”

Cake in the Garden is an exciting new initiative, inspired by global cake picnic events, and welcomes cake lovers and bakers alike to come together in a delightful fusion of flavour, creativity, and connection.

Entry to the cake picnic is exclusive to those who bring a cake – “no cake, no entry”.

The tickets are R120 on Quicket and include a cake box, five tokens for cake, a goodie bag, and a nice hot cup of tea or coffee.

The five tokens received by each ticket holder are redeemable for slices of cake, which will ensure everyone enjoys the occasion.

Attendees are encouraged to dress in florals and pastels to complement their floral-themed cake, either homemade or store-bought, to be displayed on a central table.

A selection of these cakes will be chosen for a formal competition judged by a panel.

Awards will be given for entries that demonstrate the most creativity and a beautiful presentation.

Guests are also welcome to bring picnic blankets, relax under the trees, and soak in the atmosphere.
