This festive season, a heartwarming wave of generosity has enveloped the residents of the Association for the Aged (Tafta) as the Robin Hood Foundation South Africa extends its Bless A Granny & Grandpa project across various homes. This collaboration between non-profit organisations is not just about giving, but is a testament to the profound impact that community-led kindness can have on the lives of older persons.
Guided by Charlotte Edgar, the Robin Hood Foundation team has already made stops at Tafta’s St Martins Village on October 31 and Kings Hall on November 28. Their journey of generosity continues at Tafta Lodge, John Dunn House and Langeler Towers, ensuring that hundreds of elders will feel seen, valued, and celebrated during this festive period.
These visits have transcended the bounds of a seasonal gesture; they have transformed mundane days into jubilant celebrations, said Tafta’s Chief Executive Officer, Femada Shamam. From indulging in scrumptious snacks to grooving to uplifting music, the atmosphere at each event was one of laughter and sheer joy. Residents engaged in playful dance, forming lively “trains” and swaying in unison to the Macarena, a vivid reminder that community connections can lift spirits in times of solitude.
One of the project’s most touching aspects has been the Robin Hood Foundation’s commitment to providing personalised gifts for every resident. Many of these elders rarely receive visits or tokens of affection, making these gifts truly special. Donations have poured in from generous supporters, including schoolchildren who crafted handwritten notes and photos, reinforcing the message of care and belonging that each gift embodies.
In a beautiful exchange of gratitude, residents of St Martins Village reciprocated the goodwill shown to them by preparing small potted plants for the visiting volunteers. This simple yet meaningful gesture of appreciation encapsulated the spirit of the project — love shared among generations.
Reflecting on the initiative, Shamam expressed her heartfelt thanks: “This week brought a wave of kindness from the Robin Hood Foundation South Africa. Their blessings continue to rain down on our elders. They put extraordinary effort into preparing personalised gifts for residents, and the gratitude at Kings Hall was palpable. The team was welcomed warmly, residents expressed heartfelt appreciation, and it was a beautiful exchange of generosity and joy. Thank you to the team and all who worked tirelessly to make the arrangements seamless.”
As the festive season continues, Tafta extends its deepest appreciation to the Robin Hood Foundation South Africa, its dedicated volunteers, and every donor who contributed to ensuring that love, joy, and dignity are shared abundantly with the elderly this holiday season.
