Residents and security forces unite to tackle cable theft in Empangeni

In a collective effort to combat crime, residents of Empangeni, along with private security officers, have apprehended a gang of alleged cable thieves. The collaboration highlights the strength of community involvement in addressing local issues, particularly the scourge of cable theft that has long plagued essential services.

The arrests were praised by Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, who described cable theft as no less than “economic sabotage”. In a statement, the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) confirmed that the successful operation was the result of vigilant community members working hand-in-hand with security personnel to intercept the suspects. The co-ordinated approach allowed for a swift handover to law enforcement, ensuring that justice could be pursued effectively.

MEC Buthelezi commended the bravery displayed by the residents of uMhlathuze, stating, “Their vigilance demonstrates the power of community partnership in combating crime.” His remarks underscore the critical role that community engagement plays in local safety and security. He praised the swift actions that have prevented further disruption of essential infrastructure.

The MEC went on to strongly condemn theft and sabotage of public infrastructure, which he noted significantly disrupts vital services such as water supply, electricity, sanitation, and traffic management. “Cable theft is not a petty crime — it hinders service delivery, causes power outages, leaves streets in darkness, and compromises traffic lights, putting lives at risk,” he added. “These crimes cost municipalities millions of rands and undermine the government's efforts to provide reliable services.”

In light of these incidents, Buthelezi urged the justice system to impose harsh penalties on those convicted of such crimes, as a deterrent for future offenders. He also called upon communities across KwaZulu-Natal to maintain vigilance, encouraging residents to report any suspicious activities related to cable theft or infrastructure sabotage. His rallying cry not only aims to protect local services, but also seeks to inspire a sense of shared responsibility among citizens.

This episode serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by municipalities in South Africa as they work to sustain essential services amid rising crime rates.
