In a horrifying incident that has shocked the Bekkersdal community, a late-night shooting at a licensed tavern resulted in the deaths of nine people and left ten others injured. The event unfolded in the early hours of Sunday when a group of approximately twelve unknown people launched an attack in the Tambo section.
Witnesses reported a chaotic scene as the gunmen arrived in a white kombi and a silver sedan, before opening fire indiscriminately on patrons gathered at the tavern. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the shooting continued even as the assailants fled the scene, intensifying the sense of fear and confusion that enveloped the area.
Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed the tragic outcome of the incident, stating, “Nine people were killed and ten were injured.” The injured victims have since been transported to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment as the investigation unfolds.
The motives behind this brutal assault remain unclear, and investigations are ongoing. Police have mobilised essential resources, including Forensic Crime Scene Management and Crime Intelligence, to aid in tracking down those responsible for the violence.
In a bid to gather information, Captain Sibeko has urged members of the public to come forward with any details that might assist the investigation. “Anyone who may have information is encouraged to contact SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or to submit tip-offs via the MySAPS App,” she said, highlighting the community's role in addressing the rising tide of violence.
