Emergency services paramedics demonstrated remarkable bravery and skill on Saturday as they executed a challenging five-hour rescue operation for an injured hiker in the Karkloof nature reserve, a scenic yet treacherous area near Howick. The incident unfolded around midday when a father, hiking with his son, suffered an extensive leg injury after slipping and falling down a steep path.
According to reports from Mi7 National Group, the victim and his son found themselves in a perilous situation with limited cellular reception. Realising the severity of his father's injuries, the son initially attempted to drag him to safety, but the pain was too great for the injured hiker to endure.
Faced with challenging outdoor conditions, Mi7’s Emergency Medical Services teams, in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS) Search and Rescue unit, sprang into action. Recognising the difficulty of the terrain, which made traditional emergency response methods inadequate, they dispatched a specialised rescue vehicle and an ambulance to the scene.
Upon arrival, the rescue teams navigated through a narrow, muddy path, trekking more than two kilometres up a steep hillside while carrying essential medical equipment. Their determination and commitment paid off when they finally reached the stricken hiker, who required Advanced Life Support interventions.
A medical helicopter was placed on standby as a precaution; however, the rugged terrain rendered any potential landing zones inaccessible. Despite this setback, the rescue teams demonstrated exceptional teamwork and resourcefulness. Once the patient was stabilised, he was carefully carried back down the hillside and to the awaiting ambulance for further medical care.
The emergency services personnel along with police Search and Rescue had to hike up a hill to get to the injured hiker.

The entire operation spanned over five hours, a testament to the determination and thoroughness of the rescue teams involved. Following the ordeal, the patient is reported to be recovering well, thanks to the swift actions of those who came to his aid.
With stunning landscapes and steep paths, the Karkloof nature reserve serves as a beloved retreat for hikers and nature enthusiasts. However, this incident serves as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with outdoor activities and the crucial role emergency services play in ensuring public safety.
The dedication shown by Mi7 National Group and SAPS Search and Rescue during this arduous operation underscores the importance of having trained professionals ready to respond in emergencies. Their heroic efforts not only saved a life, but also highlighted the strength of community support in the face of adversity.
