It was a bittersweet moment when it was publicly revealed on Wednesday morning that Rikus Kylander had earned five distinctions in his matric exams.

His hard work was clear for all to see, but sadly, the 18‑year‑old from Krugersdorp, Gauteng, cannot celebrate his achievements.

He disappeared while snorkelling with friends off the coast of Mozambique in December, during a trip to mark the end of matric.

After 22 days of searching along the coastline by sea, land and air — efforts that included rescue teams, volunteers and his own family — the official search was called off on Friday last week.

Rikus, who was in matric at Noordheuwel High in 2025, went into the water with about 12 friends a week before Christmas and failed to return.

The group had travelled to Ponta do Ouro Beach in Mozambique on December 16 to celebrate finishing school.

Renegades Search & Rescue spokesperson Dawn Gounden said lifeguards and authorities were alerted immediately when his friends realised he was missing.

She said search operations began that same day, with his family travelling to Mozambique and arriving the next morning to join the efforts.

His matric results, released by Noordheuwel on Wednesday morning, showed he had earned five distinctions.

The school said: "Our dear Rikus achieved five distinctions.

"What a wonderful achievement.

"We hold his parents and little sister up in prayer during this difficult time. Our hearts are with you in your sorrow. Words fail us."

In a photo with Rikus in his school uniform, the school also said: "You were a son, you were a brother, you were a family member, you were a friend, you were a Norie [the name for pupils at Noordheuwel], you were Rikus Kylander."

The school also said it wanted to celebrate his life, with more details to be released shortly.

His older sister, Clarise, previously told IOL the family had been praying for his safe return and were doing everything they could to find him.

But on Friday, she announced in a family statement that the search had come to an end.

“Everything that could be done has been done,” she said.

“We are deeply grateful to every single person who has walked alongside us during this unimaginable time — your prayers, efforts, messages, and acts of kindness have meant more than words can ever express."
