SA comedian, actor and storyteller Soli Philander has died.
Sport, arts and culture minister Gayton McKenzie confirmed the news in a statement late on Wednesday night.
The Western Cape-born entertainer, 65, was known for his comedy, storytelling and stage work, with a career that spanned television, theatre, radio and film.
Philander, of Elsies River, became widely known through television shows such as Liriekeraai and the SA version of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, where he appeared as a presenter.
Over the years he also appeared in a number of film and television productions, including Arendsvlei, Dias Santana, Hooten & the Lady, Devil’s Peak and The Umbrella Men: Escape from Robben Island.
He also had a stint on radio station CapeTalk, where he hosted the talk show Airborne.
“For decades, Philander brought laughter, insight and warmth to audiences everywhere in our country," McKenzie said.
"Whether performing on stage, presenting on television, or sharing his always-ready humour through radio and public speaking, he possessed the rare gift of making people laugh by reminding us of who we are.”
McKenzie said artists like Philander played an important role in society.
“On behalf of the sport, arts and culture department, and as a longtime fan myself, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and the many South Africans whose lives he touched through his work.”
Philander leaves behind sons Caleb and Ethan, and daughters Danya and Kyla.
He also helped care for a foster daughter, Lauren, during her final year of school with his then wife, Toni.
The couple later divorced, which he publicly confirmed in 2015.
His cause of death was not immediately known.
