On April 18, South Africa’s heartwarming community movement, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, will celebrate the essence of creativity and compassion with vibrant public gatherings across the nation. Bringing together knitters, crocheters, families, and supporters, the events are set to transform simple acts of creativity into warmth and dignity for those in need.
The central hub of these celebrations will be in Johannesburg, at the City Centre at Steyn City, where a lively Family Day Out is envisioned. Attendees can look forward to an array of colourful blanket displays, creative activities, and the infectious spirit that epitomises the 67 Blankets community. Similar festivities are slated to unfold in cities such as Cape Town, Durban, White River, and Gqeberha, showcasing the movement’s extensive reach across the country.
67 Blankets invites the public to join in the spirit of giving by bringing their yarn, knitting needles, or crochet hooks. Volunteers, both seasoned and new, will work together to create blankets that ultimately provide warmth to vulnerable South Africans, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.
The welcoming atmosphere at each gathering is set to reflect the vibrancy of community interconnectedness, inviting families and individuals from all walks of life to engage in stories, learn new skills, and contribute to acts of kindness through crafting.

The celebrations on April 18 will also usher in a pivotal new chapter for 67 Blankets, with Annie Robinson Grealy stepping into the role of head of operations. While founder Carolyn Steyn will remain closely involved at the executive level, guiding the movement's vision and growth, Robinson Grealy's appointment reinforces the organisation's commitment to evolving while staying true to its roots.
“67 Blankets has always been about community and shared purpose. Annie’s passion, organisational skills and deep commitment to the movement make her the perfect person to help guide our operations as we continue to expand our impact across South Africa,” Steyn said, reinforcing her trust in the new leadership.
Robinson Grealy shares her enthusiasm for her new role, underlining the importance of the community: “This movement has touched thousands of lives and continues to grow because of the unwavering generosity of ordinary South Africans. My focus is to support and strengthen the incredible network of ambassadors and volunteers who make it all possible.”
Since its inception in 2013, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day has mobilised thousands of volunteers to knit and crochet blankets that are distributed to those in need, effectively weaving together connections across various backgrounds. What started as a modest initiative has blossomed into a nationwide movement that has brought warmth to hospitals, shelters, schools, and other vulnerable communities, creating a rich tapestry of humanity.
The gatherings on April 18 present an excellent opportunity for the public to feel the spirit of 67 Blankets first-hand. Families, experienced crafters, beginners, and supporters are welcome to join in this empowering experience, as they share stories and transform colourful yarn into meaningful acts of kindness.
