The South African Mint has announced an artistic leap forward with the launch of its first-ever high-relief coin range, aptly named The African Range. This collection takes numismatics beyond its traditional boundaries, transforming coins into sculptural works that celebrate cultural and artistic significance.
“This is one of the most exciting products we have introduced in recent decades," said Richard Stone, Product Development Manager at the South African Mint. “Our ambition was to create a flagship collection that reflects Africa’s natural beauty, craftsmanship, and artistic excellence on a global stage.”
Setting itself apart from standard coin design protocols, which typically start with flat drawings and transition through modelling, scanning, and engraving, The African Range draws inspiration directly from existing sculptures by the internationally acclaimed South African artist Dylan Lewis. Renowned for his evocative wildlife artworks exhibited in cities including London, Paris, and New York, Lewis's sculptures serve as the foundational art for this exceptional collection.
Developing these high-relief coin designs required months of careful refinement, with each detail meticulously considered to ensure a striking end product. Stone remarked, “It was a profound responsibility to reinterpret an existing sculpture into a new medium,” highlighting the substantial artistic and technical complexities involved.
The collection’s debut release spotlights the cheetah, an emblem of speed, precision, and instinct. This five-coin narrative captures various stages of the hunt: starting from watchful surveying and stealthy stalking, through the explosive chase and decisive capture, culminating in the cheetah's final repose.
Visually, the reverse design portrays the cheetah in a poised, surveying stance, expertly rendered in high relief, ensuring exceptional depth and detail. Meanwhile, the obverse features a refined, cropped profile of the animal, crafting a dynamic visual interplay across the series.
This limited-edition collection showcases proof coins available in a range of sizes: 1 kg, 5 oz, 2 oz, 1 oz, and ¼ oz in 24-carat gold, in addition to 1 kg, 5 oz, and 2 oz options in silver. The high-relief design maintains its precision and detail across all sizes, from the intricate ¼ oz coin to the grand 1 kg format.
An exclusive feature of The African Range is the unique statue set, which pairs the 1 oz high-relief privy mark gold coin with a miniature statue modeled after the original Dylan Lewis sculpture. This innovative combination harmoniously blends fine art and numismatics into a collectible masterpiece.
Stone emphasised the collection’s lasting significance: “This is a project of enduring value. It is a story-driven series that invites collectors to embark on a journey unfolding over five years and potentially beyond. It celebrates African wildlife and artistic excellence and offers a truly exceptional South African product to collectors worldwide.”
