The City of Ekurhuleni has confirmed that its Member of the Mayoral Committee for Roads and Transport, Andile Mngwevu, is missing after the vehicle he was travelling in was swept away by floodwaters in Chokwé, southern Mozambique.
Mngwevu was part of an official delegation visiting Mozambique when severe flooding struck the area. According to the municipality, the vehicle carrying him was caught in fast-moving water and washed away.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with Mozambican authorities and emergency teams working to locate Mngwevu and any others who may have been affected by the incident. The City of Ekurhuleni said it is deeply concerned and remains in constant communication with authorities on the ground.
The SABC reported that members of Mngwevu’s family have travelled to Mozambique to support the search efforts.
Furthermore, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the Mozambique Defence Force have launched a joint operation to find the missing MMC and those who were travelling with him.
Southern Mozambique has been hit by severe flooding, which has caused widespread damage, displaced thousands of residents and destroyed critical infrastructure. Authorities say search efforts will continue, and further updates are expected as the situation develops.
