The Seshego Regional Court in Limpopo has sentenced a 32-year-old man to life imprisonment for attempted rape and an additional 10 years imprisonment for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) on his mother.

Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said the horrific incidents occurred in Seshego.

The court heard that on February 5, 2024, at about 9 pm, the 32-year-old man was staying with his mother at their residence in Seshego Extension.

“He met her (mother) in the passage and tried to rape her. The victim fought and screamed for help and their neighbours came for her rescue,” said Ledwaba.

The defenseless woman was also assaulted by her son, and the incident was immediately reported to the local police, who acted swiftly and managed to arrest the accused son on the same day.

The case docket was transferred to the Seshego Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit and allocated to Sergeant Nation Teffo, who displayed sterling detective skills to oppose bail until he secured the conviction and subsequent sentencing.

Last week, the Seshego Regional Court sentenced the 32-year-old man to life imprisonment for attempted rape and an additional 10 years for assault with GBH.

“He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm, and his name will be added to the National Register for Sex Offenders,” said Ledwaba.

In July, IOL reported that the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court sentenced a 64-year-old father from Mamelodi to life imprisonment for the repeated rape of his daughter, which lasted for almost a decade since 2010.

The court declared the 64-year-old unfit to work with children or possess a firearm, ordered his name added to the National Register for Sexual Offenders, and directed that his two granddaughters be referred to the children’s court for investigation and inquiry.

“The abuse began when the victim was nine years old in 2010, and continued until she was 19 in 2020, occurring during weekends and school holidays when the victim would visit her father,” said Lumka Mahanjana, Gauteng regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
