A KwaZulu-Natal schoolteacher is facing serious criminal charges after being arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and two stolen vehicles.

Siseko Ludongeni, a teacher at Dulati Combined School in Magqagqeni, was arrested on Wednesday.

According to Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo, authorities received a tip-off that Ludongeni was driving a stolen vehicle.

"Surveillance was conducted near the school, and the vehicle was intercepted."

Mhlongo revealed that upon searching the car, officers discovered a 9mm pistol loaded with live rounds. The vehicle was confirmed to have been stolen in Pietermaritzburg in November 2024.

Mhlongo went on to say that following the arrest, police searched Ludongeni’s homestead and found a stripped VW Polo in the garage.

"The vehicle was circulated, and it was confirmed that it was stolen in Pietermaritzburg in November last year."

That vehicle was also reported stolen, taken from the Bayview area near Chatsworth in December last year.

"Ludongeni was charged for possession of unlicensed firearm and possession of stolen motor vehicles. The seized firearm will be sent for ballistic test to ascertain if it was used in the commission of any crime in the country," says Mhlongo

He appeared in the Umzimkhulu Magistrate’s Court in absentia, and the matter was postponed to 22 September 2025.

KwaZulu-Natal Hawks Provincial Head, Major General Lesetja Senona, praised the swift action of the officers involved, saying their efforts were instrumental in removing illegal weapons and stolen property from the community.
