A KwaZulu Natal police officer has been remanded in custody after his arrest for the alleged murder of a fellow constable during a roadside dispute.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Known as the Hawks) said that Constable Andile Zulu, 40, was arrested on October 17 in connection with the fatal shooting of Constable Siboniso Ngidi, 29. The incident occurred on October 11 in Marianhill west of Durban.

Hawks' spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo, said that during the day of the incident, Constable Ngidi was driving along the Chestnut Crescent when he encountered a vehicle obstructing the road.

Upon requesting the driver to move aside, an altercation broke out.

"An altercation ensued and that driver who was later identified as Constable Zulu fired several shots towards Constable Ngidi," says Mhlongo.

Ngidi was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival. A murder case was opened at Marianhill police station and handed over to the Hawks for investigation.

Mhlongo said that preliminary findings led officers to Escombe railway station where Zulu was stationed.

He added that Zulu evaded arrest but later surrendered the following day to the National Intervention Unit in Durban Central.

"Constable Zulu was placed under arrest and charged for murder as well as attempted murder."

The suspect appeared in the Pinetown Magistrates Court on 20 October 2025 and was remanded in custody, however his bail hearing is scheduled for 27 October.

The KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General Lesetja Senona welcomed the arrest and commended the members for the good work.
