Alleged mastermind behind Westbury mass shooting due in court

The alleged mastermind behind the Westbury mass shooting, which left two teenagers dead and five others wounded, is set to make his first court appearance in Johannesburg on Monday.

A 36-year-old man believed to be the mastermind behind the recent mass shooting in Westbury, Johannesburg, that claimed the lives of two teenagers is expected to make a first appearance in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning.

Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said the suspect was nabbed in the Westbury area on Friday and is believed to be the mastermind. 

Two teengers died in a hail of bullets on October 21, 2025 in Croesus Street. 

The victims are Tigan du Plessis,18, and 17-year-old Diegan Ryters.

According to police, seven teenagers aged between 13 and 19 were approached on foot by four suspects.

The suspect is facing two counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder.

Police have also arrested and charged a 20-year-old in connection with the same shooting. 

He was arrested at a high school in Diepkloof and appeared in court on Friday.

His bail application is expected to be heard on Thursday. . 

 

Muridili said investigations are ongoing to track down the remaining suspects.

She confirmed that two of the five injured victims have been discharged from hospital.

“The SAPS urges the public to assist in the investigation by providing any relevant information regarding the whereabouts of the suspects by calling the SAPS Crime Stop line at 08600 10111. Callers may remain anonymous,” she added.
