IPID launches probe into 19-year-old’s death in police custody

Following the death of 19-year-old Kuhle Zindlu after his arrest in Mthatha, IPID has received the docket and registered the case, launching a preliminary investigation to determine the circumstances of his death.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the death of a 19-year-old man who was allegedly found dead while in police custody.

Kuhle Zindlu was arrested in Upper Qweqwe, Mthatha, on November 22, 2025.

He was later found dead near the Mthatha Central Police security guardroom. 

IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping confirmed that the directorate had received copies of the docket related to the case on Thursday, January 15, 2026.

“The copies of the docket were received on Thursday, 15 January 2026, and IPID has registered the case with reference number CCN2026010251 as Death in police custody, and the directorate is conducting a preliminary investigation into the matter,” Shuping said.
