Traffic police have arrested more than 100 people in KZN for driving while under the influence of alcohol

More than 100 people were arrested for drunk driving despite the heavy rains that lashed parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday.
Already, the provincial department's #NenzaniLaEzweni campaign has seen the arrests of hundreds of drivers over the Easter long wekend.
On Sunday, the KZN Department of Transport said among the 116 arrested were a public prosecutor, teachers, a town planner, an occupational therapist, a Metro Police officer, and a forensic officer.
"Despite the heavy rainfall and a storm that hit Pietermaritzburg, some motorists continued to drink and drive as if it were a normal day. The no-nonsense Road Traffic Inspector working with Umsunduzi Traffic, moved in quickly like lightning," the department said.
A man was arrested for preventing officials from arresting his girlfriend.
On Sunday, in Pietermaritzburg, 26 people were arrested while 31 people were arrested in Margate, 31 in uMzimkhulu and Kokstad, and 31 in Newcastle.
This is in addition to the drivers nabbed on KZN roads from the start of the long weekend.
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy said six provinces recorded a decrease in the number of road fatalities.
The Minister noted that the number of fatalities, recorded from the start of the long Easter weekend, decreased from 356 to 291 in the same period last year. This is according to preliminary reports.
