The grandparents of missing two-year-old Omphile Sethole have been remanded in custody after appearing before the Mahwelereng Magistrate’s Court on charges linked to alleged child negligence.
Police said Nkgalakana Vinolia Mabusela, 52, and Lesiba Jacob Ledwaba, 55, were arrested by members of the Mokopane Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit following investigations into the disappearance of the toddler.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that the pair appeared in court on Monday and were remanded in custody until May 25, 2026, for a formal bail application.
Police said a case of housebreaking and kidnapping was initially opened after the child’s grandmother allegedly discovered the toddler missing at around 6am.
Authorities said a window in the room had reportedly been left open.
“At the time of her disappearance, Omphile was wearing a pink jersey and black tights,” Ledwaba said.
Despite ongoing investigations and search efforts, the child remains missing.
“Police confirm that the child remains missing and investigations aimed at locating her are continuing,” Colonel Ledwaba said.
Authorities have appealed to members of the public to assist with information that could help locate the toddler.
Anyone with information regarding Omphile Sethole’s whereabouts has been urged to contact Mokopane FCS investigating officer Warrant Officer Chuene Selolo on 082 469 2594, Crime Stop on 08600 10111, the nearest police station, or share information anonymously through the MySAPSApp.
