When Lameec Crawford crossed the graduation stage to receive her degree with distinction, it was more than just an academic achievement — it was the fulfilment of a dream years in the making.

“This was a huge milestone for me, which I will never forget,” said Crawford. “I just heard my 13-year-old self saying to me, ‘We made it.’”

The Newlands East resident recently graduated with her IIE Bachelor of Arts degree with distinction at Emeris Durban North’s graduation ceremony, becoming the first person in her family to earn a university qualification.

Her journey to graduation was far from easy. During her first year of studies, Crawford unexpectedly lost her mother, a heartbreaking moment that nearly derailed her dreams.

“There were many times where I wanted to give up, but I was determined to keep going,” she said. “My mom never had the opportunity to complete her studies, so graduating meant even more to me.”

Supported by her family, friends and lecturers, Crawford persevered through grief while maintaining a distinction average throughout her degree.

She is also a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society, which recognises high-achieving students for their academic excellence.

Crawford initially planned to pursue law but discovered her passion for psychology during orientation.

“I have always been someone who enjoys understanding the why and how things happen,” she explained.

Outside the classroom, she immersed herself in the institution’s student body organisation, saying it helped her feel like she truly belonged on campus.

“I love being around people, being involved and contributing wherever I can,” she said.

Now continuing her studies with an IIE Bachelor of Arts Honours in Psychology, Crawford hopes to eventually complete her master’s degree and build a meaningful career helping others.

Looking back on everything she has overcome, she hopes her story reminds those facing challenges that difficult moments do not define their future.

“If you remember why, it will motivate you to just keep going,” she said.
