Hoërskool Pretoria-Wes learner Arthur Mathebula, 19, has expressed deep gratitude after his BackaBuddy campaign to fund his matric dance raised more than three times his original target.

“The support I received has been overwhelming, in a good way of course. I did not expect so much love, and I am so grateful to everyone who donated and shared my story,” Mathebula told IOL.

He had initially asked for R2,500 but received R8,578, which he described as far beyond what he could have imagined.

"Well, to be honest, I did not expect it to reach so many people. I was expecting a few donations at least, but the generosity and outpouring of support was truly inspiring to me," Mathebula said.

The Pretoria teenager said he launched the campaign after realising he could not afford all the expenses of the event.

“What inspired me to start the BackaBuddy campaign. I really wanted to attend the matric dance stunningly as well, but then I realised I wouldn't be able to cover financially for everything."

Mathebula's dance will take place on October 2 in Pretoria East. He plans to attend in a black three-piece suit, tailored by a fashion designer, and confirmed that he had already secured a date.

Looking ahead, he said some of the funds would also be used for his future: obtaining a driver's licence, paying registration fees, and saving for university.
